Risk of splitting at 3-D format
(Computer Zeitung, 19 July 2004) - Munich (fg) - Dassault
Systèmes and the Japanese software company Lattice
aim for an XML-based standard format for 3-D engineering
data. Toyota supports the alliance. Herewith Dassault
produces a counterpoise to the JT-Open-Consortium, which
the engineering specialists UGS and PTC as well as General
Motors, Ford and Daimler-Chrysler are part of. Original
German version.
Comment
A Frenchman copies Microsoft
How many standards for 3-D interchange formats does the producing
industry need? According to one's best judgement one should
do. The JT-Open-Consortium with the Product Lifecycle Management
specialists UGS and PTC, which was founded in fall 2003,
did not appear to be on the wrong track. Otherwise Ford,
General Motors and Daimler-Chrysler would not have hooked
up to the group. Now Dassault presents the counterdraft XVL
and announces the intention of producing a worldwide standard.
This solo attempt harms the efforts to ease the interchange
of engineering data. Although JT Open is not perfect, it
has already met with broad resonance throughout the industry.
For Dassault it would have been easier to join the committee
and place its own ideas... if they had just wanted to. Principal
of the firm, Bernard Charlès, who often praises himself
for his good contacts to Bill Gates, has obviously copied
something from Microsoft. Original
