1. What is the objective of JT Open?

JT Open is an influential community of users, software vendors, and interested parties spanning the PLM value chain who, through an open distribution of the JT technology under a level playing field business model, are able to share 3D data for the purposes of visualization, collaboration and data-sharing.

2. How big is the market for JT-enabled applications?

Today, there are over 35,000 JT-enabled sites around the world, but this represents only a fraction of the potential market. Current industry thinking is that for every 3D CAD seat deployed there are 20-30 end-users who can make use of the signed-off data in the context of visualization and interrogation using less expensive applications on less expensive hardware. A recent estimate of the global 3D CAD installed base (~1.8M) puts the opportunity for JT-enabled applications at well over 36 million seats.

3. Who can join JT Open?

Any organization that is interested in tapping into the JT pipeline can join JT Open. This includes software vendors who wish to develop JT-enabled applications for sale to other member companies as well as companies that have integrated JT or wish to make JT a standard part of their business processes.

The JT Open Toolkit is a C++ library. It is available on a large number of hardware and operating system platforms. Windows, SUN, HP, SGI, and AIX are supported. 7. How easy is it to implement the JT Open toolkit?

The JT Open Toolkit provides a wide range of C++ classes to read and write JT information. The JT Open Toolkit documentation provides several well annotated examples that provide a framework for many of the expected uses of the JT data within an application.

8. Why should I support JT in my application?

JT-enabling an application will extend its market space to include the many important end-users who have already selected JT as the backbone of their visualization strategy. JT-enablement will also add value to installed seats by facilitating end-users as they join the JT community.

9. Is JT Open an attempt to create a standard, such as STEP or IGES?

JT Open is not an attempt to create a standard such as STEP or IGES. Those formats address different requirements. JT is a format that is tailored for multi-cad data-sharing, based on the high-definition, small footprint, visual, and optional exact (Brep) information. JT has become a widely used format and its future is driven by the members. This approach will allow the JT technology and adoption to advance swiftly to meet ever changing market demands.

10. What are the advantages of standardizing on JT for visualization, collaboration and data-sharing?

By standardizing on a single technology for visualization, collaboration and data-sharing, you will be able to increase the frequency and decrease the cost of leveraging your design information in other business processes. JT is the best available option for standardization because of its broad market acceptance and well supported technology set.

11. Why am I able to sell my JT-enabled product on a royalty free basis only to other JT Open program members?

This is a key feature of the business model and encourages more members to join in order to gain the benefits of the JT Open program. If you identify an opportunity to sell your JT-enabled products to a non-member, this can be done on a per-seat royalty basis.
